I have an abusive father. Once my best friend saw my dad starting to hit me and he stood in front of me and took the beating for me. He ended up with a broken arm, nose, getting thrown down the stairs, and bruises everywhere. Then he told me he'd go through it every day if it meant I'd never go through it again.

A man and his two daughters were on a boat. A larger boat was coming right at them, and was going to run right into them. The man jumped over and pushed his daughters out of the way, saving their lives - and losing his legs. I see him working out at the gym every day with his prosthetics.

3 years ago, there was a new girl in my class. She she sat next to me and talked to me. Last year, I finally admitted my parents beat me. Now, I live with her and her parents like a family. Today was the first day I smiled.

Today, I was diagnosed with Leukemia. I went to the store to get a drink, and lady that worked there looked at me and said "You know, this is the first time I've seen you without makeup, and you're beautiful." A group of senior boys were behind me, and one said "She's right, you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My mom thinks I'm a bookworm, always hanging out at Borders all the time.
Secretly, I slip post-its into books complimenting people who open them.
Today, I saw an anorexic girl open a book about eating disorders, and grin at a little green compliment stuck to the page. It was my post-it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few months ago an 18 year-old girl collapsed at home.
After being taken to the hospital, she had already been dead for several minutes.
But one doctor refused to let her go and so his team attempted to resuscitate her. And because of him, she is alive today. I owe this doctor my life.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're an autistic boy and don't liked to be touched. I'm a lonely girl who needs human contact. We're best friends. You come up to me and hug me every day. I asked you why. You said, "Because I'd rather see you smile than me be comfortable all the time."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

At my senior prom, there was a girl in my grade who is handicapped and confined to a wheelchair. During one of the slow dances, a boy picked her up from her chair and slow danced with her, holding her up the entire time, so that she could have at least one dance at her prom.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was brushing my 8 year old daughter's hair this morning and was telling her she should get it cut because she looks so cute with short hair. She said "But Mom, I'm growing it for Locks of Love so people with cancer can have hair."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My older brother has suffered with borderline autism, OCD, and a variety of disorders for his whole life. In the 10th grade, he decided to stop getting help with school work and do it all himself. Last month, he graduated with honors from college with a bachelors in Political Science.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I was waiting for the bus near a bunch of obnoxious teenagers who were smoking. I'm pregnant. One of the teenagers saw my belly and put out her newly lit cigarette. Then, she also got her friends to do so. She said to me, "I may have a disgusting habit, but it's not fair your child has to suffer."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been on and off of crutches for 10 years now. No one ever helped me. When my family moved I had to start my junior year at a new school. My first day of school while I was on the stairs four guys on the football team walk by me. But the fifth guy stopped and carried me up the stairs. Now whenever I see him he asks if I need help.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

When my daughter was 16 a surgery was scheduled to remove tumors in her throat to save her life. They told her that after this surgery, she'd have to be on permanent meds and wouldn't be able to speak again.Last night, I watched her perform in the musical The Wizard of Oz. She was Dorothy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

A mother was going to have her baby aborted. At the hospital, she spoke to the doctor of the abortion in a hallway when a 3 year old girl ran over. She said, "Please don't. She could be my friend." 15 years later and that once little girl is the best friend I could ever have.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year my mom, little brother, and I were homeless. While we were homeless, my mom worked 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. She was so strong for us, that she would never cry in front of us. We now live in a nice apartment. I'm doing great in school, my brother's happy, and my mom is getting married to the love of her life.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My grandpa has had eight strokes in the past year. The last stroke was so bad that he lost the ability to speak. The first time I went to see him, he was able to say my name. He'd been practicing with my grandma so he could say all of his grandkids' names.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

When my brother was in kindergarden, he couldn't stop talking about how cool and funny his best friend Jeremy is. When we met him, we saw he was in a wheelchair.
On the way home we asked my brother why he never told us that Jeremy was in a wheelchair. He simply said, "Because it isn't important."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

21 years ago my sister was born with Edwards Syndrome or Complete Trisomy 18.
The doctors told my parents that helping this baby is a lost cause and she will only live for a month. My parents refused to give up and not help her. My sister turned 21 on Sunday. She is the oldest living person with Complete Trisomy 18.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I work at a day camp. This week, I saw a little girl learn how to ride a pony, climb a tree, and teach ten other kids how to do a cartwheel. She lost most of her right hand to cancer when she was three years old.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I was in college, I had both Japanese and Java programming with a guy a year below me. He was an absolute genius, and was a Physics major specializing in very hands on subjects. He was blind.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am the only mixed-race girl in a class of 28 white students. A few days ago, our class teacher casually made a racist remark. One boy challenged her and got sent outside. The teacher told us that if anybody else had a problem then they should also leave. The whole class stood up and walked out.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I moved to China completely alone. One month in, I was so overwhelmed and homesick I sat in a tea shop crying. A Chinese man handed me tissue and smiled. I spoke no Chinese, and he no English. Five years and countless hours of studying later, we exchanged bilingual wedding vows.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I get teased a lot for being a tomboy and wearing guy's clothes. One day when someone was teasing me, my best guy friend overheard and came over. He was wearing the same shirt I was, and said: "Even though we're wearing the same shirt, she makes it look a whole lot better."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Almost every day, I wonder why no boy has every come up to me and said he liked me, or why I have never had a boyfriend. But then I think how there is someone out there in the world that loves me, we just might not know each other yet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today was the first time I felt pretty. My hair wasn't done, my make up was smeared, and one of the new pairs of pants I bought were too small. I weigh 217 pounds, and I finally, some how, managed to be okay with it. I love myself, and I don't even know why. I'm who I am. Every woman is beautiful.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know what it's like to feel like you have no one in this world who cares about you.
I'd like for everyone too feel as though they do. So, as being the first, I'd like to introduce myself. Hi, I'm a random stranger. And I care.

A little girl was dying of cancer and her younger brother had a match for the bone marrow she needed. The doctors told him it was a matter of life and death. After he had the surgery, he asked the doctors how long he had to live. He thought if he gave his bone marrow to let his sister live he would die - but he did it anyway.
